Read F14 Tomcat Grumman &ldquoTop Gun&rdquo from Vietnam to the Persian Gulf Legends of Warfare Aviation David F Brown Books
It has been said that “bombers make history; fighters make movies.†In the case of the Grumman F-14 Tomcat, both are true. It made history as a fleet defender, reconnaissance platform, and strike fighter. The Tomcat was also featured in such Hollywood classics as Top Gun, The Final Countdown, and Executive Decision, followed by television appearances on JAG. This new illustrated look at the iconic Tomcat features a concise, detailed look at its design and construction, followed by its service in the US Navy from 1975 to 2006. Also covered is a rare look at its use by the Imperial Iranian Air Force, and continued use by the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force. All USN units that flew the Tomcat are featured, including squadron patches, markings, and nose art. Combat operations are discussed, including aerial combat over Libya, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Part of the Legends of Warfare series.

- Noted author and photographer David F. Brown has provided aviation enthusiasts and art lovers with another gem “F-14 Tomcat Grumman's ‘Top Gun’ from Vietnam to the Persian Gulf,†part of the Schiffer Legends in Warfare series. The author starts with a concise but complete story of the F-14’s development and quickly moves to the Tomcat’s early years in the US Navy. He provides representative photos, some that may be familiar to Tomcat fans, but all are excellent quality. (An example is the photo of an early F-14 carrying fourteen Mk. 82 bombs I don’t recall seeing it in color or as sharp as it is here.) The text continues with the Tomcat’s variants and operational highlights, again with appropriate photos in high quality. Roughly half of the book, by page count, is a squadron-by-squadron photo show of US Navy Tomcat operators, with images showing interesting and significant aircraft, such as various paint schemes and high-time jets. The photo selection is first-rate, many taken by the author but supplemented as necessary to tell the story, and the excellent captions make this a self-guided tour of the Tomcat’s career. The final pages cover the Tomcat Sunset – its final days with the US Navy – and those F-14s still flying operationally with Iran’s air force. As an F-14 RIO I’ve “lived†the Tomcat legend, but the author provides many new details and his exceptional writing made this book enjoyable. An excellent addition to an enthusiast’s library.
- David's book is a true work of art. From the cover to cover, you won't want to put it down. The pages turn themselves. Anyone who is a fan of aviation of any sort, especially military aviation, and ESPECIALLY Tomcat enthusiasts should own this book, and get one to give away to someone else, too. All of the photos are spectacular, with many taken by the author, David F. Brown himself. This is one special book.
- As a former Tomcat Tweaker, I loved helping to maintain the Cats in the fleet. As such, this book is yet another wonderful exempt of the F-14 Tomcat impressive history. Filled with outstanding photos of every squadron’s birds, with the history and stories of missions flown, it is worth the read. Enjoy it.
Just be sure to read it with a cat on your lap! - It is a well known fact in aviation circles that if you want to know anything about the Grumman F-14 Tomcat, you have to look no further than David F. Brown, "Mr. Tomcat". David has penned two previous volumes concerning the Tomcat, "Tomcat Alley A Photographic Roll Call of the Grumman F-14 Tomcat" and "Tomcats Forever", which was a team effort with legendary aviation author, the late Robert F. Dorr. The combination of David's pen and camera skills and his proficiency at documenting history have led to his latest offering, "F-14 Tomcat Grumman's Top Gun from Vietnam to the Persian Gulf". This new book is a must have for any F-14, naval aviation, or aircraft enthusiast's library and provides ample material to sink your teeth into. From the development to the operational history and current status of one of the most beautiful aircraft ever built, this book is the Cat's Meow. It's a tail-wagging, fantastic read.
- David Brown has done it again. His latest book on the F-14 Tomcat takes us squadron by squadron with the F-14. David has collected pictures from his own collection, other photographers, and the Pilots and RIOs that flew the Tomcat. It makes a great companion book to Tomcat Alley and is a must for anyone that loves the Tomcat.
- David's book is a must own for the Naval Aviation enthusiast. Lots of great information and excellent pictures. I have a hard time putting the book down.
