The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs A New History of Their Lost World Steve Brusatte 9780062490438 Books Reviews

  • Actually, I'm giving this book 4 1/2 stars. One thing I learned from this book is that paleontologists are party animals. Steve Brusatte, one of the top young dinosaur hunters in the world, has written a marvelous book that is part autobiography, part natural history, and part fossil hunting how-to. During the autobiographical parts, he gives us some humorous descriptions of how fossil hunters relax after a day in the rubble. Spoiler alert Alcohol is consumed. Another thing I liked about this book is the further you read, the better the book gets. When I was about halfway through it, I wished he would tell readers a story of dinosaur encounters told by the fossils in a certain place—and darned if he didn’t do exactly that! And of course, like in plays and works of fiction, this book has a climax the impact of the Chicxulub asteroid that ended the Cretaceous Era and the Age of Dinosaurs. But it also has a denouement, a tying together of all loose ends the dinosaurs are still with us in the form of birds. My only criticism of the book is that in the early parts there are mentions of dozens and dozens of dinosaur species that do not have illustrations, so the book drags a little, but Brusatte picks up the pace and the story becomes fascinating. This is the best dinosaur book I’ve ever read; it’s even better than Walter Alvarez’s T. rex and the Crater of Doom (1997).
  • I browsed the reviews before I bought the book and was very amused by the one-star reviewers who groused about Dr. Brusatte's writing style. Apparently they think dinosaur books should be fusty tomes written in the finest Dense Academicby human dinosaurs and they were irked not to find that stuff in this book. Well, no. And that's the best thing about The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs.

Dr. Brusatte clearly loves what he's doing. And he has fun doing it. And he wants to share the joy with the world. He has a bright, engaging style and he can tell a story like nobody's business. Just wait till you get to the tale of the breakup of Pangaea, or the day the asteroid hit. You won't find a better, more vivid account anywhere.

I originally checked the book out of the library but it was soon clear I'd have to buy my own copy. If you care anything at all about dinosaurs, get this book. Encourage Steve Brusatte to write more!
  • I am a professor of geology who occasionally teaches about dinosaurs, and this book is a great resource for anyone interested in dinosaurs but intimidated by the complexities of paleontology and geology. The book is detail-packed without being overwhelming for the non-obsessive dinosaur enthusiast, and Brusatte's narrative style really guides the reader through the landscapes of the Mesozoic while providing personal details that help the reader buy into the excitement of the science. This book is a valuable addition to the growing canon of enjoyable scientific non-fiction.
  • Dr. Brusatte has written a wonderful book, easy to read and very informative. It's the story of the origin and demise of the most intriguing class of animals the world has ever seen. He tells of how at the end of the Permian Period around 250 million years ago, the beginning of the Triassic, the small, nearly insignificant dinosauromorphs began to evolve into what we now call dinosaurs. They were to rule the animal world for the next 150 million years. Dr. Brusatte includes descriptions of paleo sites he visited in Europe, China, South America, Africa and North America, meeting with local Paleontologists, discovering clues to the growth and diversity of the dinosaurs. A number of sections reveal details of the most famous dinosaurs of the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods plus those that evolved into today's birds. And finally, the sudden death of all the dinosaurs at the end of the Cretaceous Period 66 million years ago - except their evolved offspring... birds.
If you thought you knew all about dinosaurs, you will learn much more in his book.
  • I can only give this 3 stars. It is readable, almost too chatty. It goes through the dinosaur era, but too much of the book is dedicated to thumbnail sketches of other paleontologists -- all of whom see to be Brusatte's best friends now. It gets tiresome. I liked the descriptions of how they find the bones and dig them up. I also like the descriptions of how the various species changed over the years, and differed once the super-continent Pangea broke up into separate land masses. But too many times there were descriptions of dinosaurs without any illustrations, or any photos of the fossils. I would have liked a lot more of those. Brusatte can glide right through important stuff. He tells us that the Yucutan asteroid crater was found, but not how it was found. So the book was okay as far as it went, but it could have been a lot better.
  • I have both the audiobook The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs A New History of a Lost World and hardcover The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs A New History of a Lost World editions. The hardcover edition is perfect to flip though with my small children, looking at the illustrations, charts, and tables, and reading excerpts here and there. The audiobook is perfect for my commute - I can just imagine the fantastic prehistoric animals and landscapes Brusatte paints with his writing. I am enjoying this book thoroughly. I especially appreciate how Brusatte dispenses with "Dinosaur Exceptionalism", instead taking a clear-eyed look at just how little dinosaurs initially differed from other prehistoric animals, then traces their rise and diversification over the ensuing millions of years. Brusatte carries the reader along with easy-to-follow narrative, interspersing accessible analogies and anecdotes to distill and enliven complex material. This book does a great job of placing the minute blip of human existence into the context of the vast swaths of time dominated by species of animals other than our own. I highly recommend this wonderful new book!

There are legions upon legions of angels on assignment from God. They are here to help, protect, and guide us. Texts by an Angel is a compilation of short stories that are about the influence, interference and shenanigans of angels. What do you need your angels for? They get extremely joyful at the opportunity to serve you.

Here is a sample from Sherry’s story. (Sherry quit school while being only two classes away from obtaining her Bachelor of Social Work degree.)

“Things can’t be this hard. God, why won’t You help me? Where are You?”As she continued ranting, her cell phone chimed. She jumped, not aware her ringer was on. It was a text message from a number she didn’t recognize.

Are you serious right now?

I’m sorry, who are you? I believe you have the wrong number.

Sherry, right?

Yeah? Why?

I’m asking, are you serious right now? You’re ranting. Having a meltdown as if your life is over.

Again, who are you?

Let’s talk about your BSW. You need two classes! Did you seek a tutor? Did you join a study group? Did you see if there were alternative classes that could equate or be substituted for a math class? How hard did you try?

First of all, I don’t know who you are for you to talk/text to me like this.

Ocean of Milk Ocean of Blood A Mongolian Monk in the Ruins of the Qing Empire Matthew W King 9780231191067 Books Reviews

  • Zava Damdin was a Mongolian Buddhist monk and chronicler who lived from 1867 to 1937, thus seeing the fall of the Qing Dynasty, the coming of Mongolian independence, the takeover by USSR-backed communists, and the beginnings of the holocaust when extremists on the left almost exterminated the monks and traditional Buddhists of Mongolia--5% of the population. Zava Damdin wrote thousands of pages recording the history of the Mongols and of Buddhism as he saw these. His conclusion that essentially all early East-Central Asians were Mongols (or at least close) has not stood the test of time, nor has his dismissal of the spherical earth and other scientific findings contrary to traditional Buddhist cosmology. On the other hand, his scholarship and creative writing and his records of what he himself saw are vivid and fascinating. He wrote in literary Tibetan, which filled the role in Qing Mongolia that Latin filled in medieval Europe. He met many scholars Tibetans, Russians, Chinese, and of course other Mongols. In a turn that disoriented me a bit, he even met a member of the circle of Mikhail Bakhtin, one of my favorite thinkers and one I never expected to find on the early 20th century Mongolian frontier.
Matthew King provides Zava Damdin's biography and attendant history, but the book is really a many-sided exploration of ideas and encounters in Zava's world. Dr. King handles modern literary, cultural, and historical theory with ease and style. The book is notably well written--an enjoyable read though challenging and thought-provoking. It is not only an excellent work; it is important beyond the confines of Mongolia. Countless such thinkers in traditional cultural settings had to confront sudden, disruptive modernity at that point in time, and few did it with as much reflection and diligence. One can say of Damdin what economists sometimes say of Marx "He may have gotten some wrong answers, but he asked all the right questions."

Beastie Boys Book Audible Audio Edition Michael Diamond Adam Horovitz various Random House Audio Books Reviews

  • I grew up on the Beastie Boys first album, License to Ill. It was just great! I knew every song front to back. Having the large folded album cover to reveal a crashed plane tells you a little something about what you will get. I was young and so my comparison to other music was not much. But I knew I liked it! As a kid, it was more about learning the lyrics and seeing if you can keep up singing along. It was quite fun!

As I matured, so did their music. Later we got So Wha'cha Want, Sabotage, and Intergalactic as their highlights. They only produced eight albums, but each one was surprisingly unique from the one prior. But, for me, I rarely follow musicians personal lives and dont pay attention to much else besides when I either buy an album or its on the radio.

As with the Beastie Boys, while I did not buy every one of their albums or follow their personal lives beyond their music, I was surprised when I heard of Adam Yauch's death. Seemed so soon. And the opening story by Mike D reminded me of this fact and how impactful he was on their lives, personally and musically. Most of the book are reminiscing by the remaining two Beastie Boys, Mike D and Ad-Rock, telling their stories through each album and other incidents that may or may not have been controversial at the time. Some of the photos in the book I can even recall from back in my youth, seeing them in music mags or newspapers, wondering what exactly what happened.

The book is filled evenly with pictures and stories. At 550 pages, you are getting the full gamut here, and from the horses mouth. The book is well designed that is funny, heartfelt and inspiring. It is less of a biography of a band and more of a culture. Some are anecdotal. Some are things strictly from their memory. Other things culled from events known to everyone. All within the changing climate of the early 80's with rap on the rise and punk rock on the decline. And these guys are the spawn of that zeitgeist. Overall, this is a perfect book and to revisit Beastie Boys in this way gives them substance as both musicians and creative and intelligent people.
  • Buy, steal, beg for, or borrow this book. I'm not going to get into my level of Beastie Boys fandom, because that belongs to me, and it be impossible to explain the importance and impact of the Beastie Boys have had on my life. They've been the soundtrack to my life, the good and the bad. Some of my fondest memories involve going to see them live, or having Paul's Boutique on in the background while something memorable is happening. It's difficult to put into words, though. Seriously. I am who I am (a divorced 44 year old dad of two) today because of them. One of the standout memories of my childhood was, at 11 years old, taking the bus to the next town over, and going to the record store. Inside, they were playing 'Licensed to Ill', and I'll never forget that moment. It changed my life.

From what I've read so far, AdRock's chapter on cassette tapes really hit home. It's....perfect. Nostalgia personified, and he absolutely nails it - how ridiculous a method it was to record/playback music, etc., yet how critical cassette tapes were to us as kids, and how their existence and meaning shaped who we became today.

To AdRock and Mike D. A million thank-yous! I know you understand the impact you've had on multiple generations, around the world, and that's something that will live forever. Even now, 30+ years later, me and my kids belt out Beastie Boys tunes while driving around, and it's so much fun! It's truly something special, the impact and importance the Beasties had, and still have, and all I can say is THANK YOU! For those reading, go get this book. Sure, it weighs over 3 lbs. and as thick as a college textbook (or Bible, even), but man, is it essential reading.
  • UPDATE I take back my disappointment with . They refunded my $5.00 extra I had paid when I pre-ordered it without me even asking. Good job .

“And you know he weighs in pretty hefty…”

Hefty is a perfect word for this book. More Chicago style pizza than NY.

I’ve not read the book except a few pages I’ve skimmed since I got it a couple of hours ago. So my review is on the Book structure and printing…and unfortunately ’s declining care of products it sells.

The Book. As said above it’s huge. Not tall or wide but thick. “Ah, like a thick-ass book that's filled with wack rhymes”. Unlike most biographies where there are about 20 pages in the middle devoted to photos, this book has the photos and illustrations are throughout it’s entirety. It resembles a Fanzine more than a book. Plus there are tons of little extras throughout that only Beastie Fans will appreciate.

The binding is quality and seems like it will stand the test of time. From what I can tell it has smyth sewn binding which make it lay fairly flat when opened on a table. This is nice because you can actually see the middle parts of this gigantic book.

The paper and printing are quality as well. The paper is a non-coated stock (matte) which allows the ink to absorb into the page creating rich deep colors in the photographs. Plus the paper has a nice nostalgic smell. There are a few glossy sections but only used when appropriate, or to break up the pace of the book.

Now onto the not so Prime deal I got on this book. Note This is just me being picky. But needs to be noted in case others got the same damage on their book and paid more for it. I pre-ordered my book months ago for $35 through Prime. I now see it’s $30. “Knucklehead deli tried to gyp me on the price” I get it, prices change blah blah blah. I wouldn’t be so upset except that although my book was on my doorstep at 8am this morning which was sofa king Rad to wake up to, it is damage. The top right corner all the way through the pages to the back cover (see photos). I’ve tried to mend it myself the best I can. I’ll probably keep because it’s a waste of natural resources to ship this back because of a bent corner. I know I sound like I’m being silly about this but when it’s delivered damaged (no way this happened in shipping, the box was in perfect shape) and then you see that you could have waited and saved $5…it just gets under the skin.

Anyways, if you love the Beasties and have been with them since the 80s like me, or even if you are a newer fan of this millennium…get this book. R.I.P. MCA.
  • I've been a huge Beastie Boys fan for 25 years. They have a diverse taste in music they're smart and extremely funny and intelligent. The book is a great read with a lot of Great stories.
